Xander Steyn

Xander Steyn is a multi-talented individual. He is an actor, singer, dancer, director and choreographer. He is an artist in all facets - from fine arts to the performing arts. He has been singing, drawing and painting since he can remember and selling his art at markets in the small town he grew up in.

At the age of 16 he was part of the Water colour Society of South Africa and took part in painting classes with the amazing artist Therésé Grunow. Since then he has explored all kinds of media in art. From charcoal to acrylic and pen. Whilst performing in shows with his two talented sisters, Christine and Ansua at Arts Fes-tivals he also exhibited his art at the Volksblad Arts Festival in 2003 and 2004 and was the best selling artist there.

Xander studied Architecture at UFS and later did his Honours degree at WITS in Johannesburg. Although Xander has no formal traing in dance, this did not stop him - he was part of the group Karpos (an Evangilistic dance and drama group of UFS) and starred in productions like H2O, One Way (that toured Holland) and Sold Out. Later that year he was a semi-finalist in the ATKV Crescendo and kykNET Zing competitions. In 2004 after moving to Johannesburg he did an ABBA corporate show in Cape Town and played leading roles in newly written Afrikaans musicals Krokketopia, Speel-Speel, Vere and Stasionêr. 2005 includes performances in Salon Music’s Chocolat and Mozart as well as choreogaphy for the ATKV Lier Awards and the production Lappop Job.

Whilst doing his post-grad degree at WITS he did voice work for ABSA, PPS, Toyota and Vodacom. He was also the story-teller on Thabang Thabong on SABC2 and played the role of ‘Alan’ in the most popular soap in South Africa Generations on SABC1.

In 2006 he performed in My Fair Lady (Pretoria State Theatre), Janice Honeyman’s Aladdin, Peter Pan & Snow White, Fiddler on the Roof (Joburg Theatre) and he played Rocky in The Rocky Horror Show.

In 2008 he recorded an Afrikaans album with the beautiful and talented Nadia Beukes (presenter on kykNET) as NX. Their single ‘Jakaranda Jaar’ is still playing on OFM and other radio stations all around South Africa with two music videos on kykNET as well. In 2009 Xander started his own design company ‘designX’.

In 2010 he was an MC at the FIFA Soccer World Cup and a stylist for Miss South Africa. He also had the opportunity to sing with the amazing UK artist Imogen Heap. He was also in the top 15 men of So You Think You Can Dance. In 2011 he was one of the lead vocals in the show ‘What A Feeling’ at the Boma Theatre and in Deon Opperman’s Afrikaans musical ‘Tree Aan’. He was also part of the production ‘Houtkruis’ at the Sand du Plessis Theatre.

In 2012 he went abroad and taught musical theatre to all ages in Seoul, South Korea. He directed and choreographed productions such as The Sound of Music, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and West Side Story. In 2014 he moved back to South Africa and started his own production company (Xander Art Productions) that specializes in Musical Theatre and Art. He directed, wrote, choreographed and performed in the production ‘LIFE’ that was performed at the Gallery on Leviseur.

He also directed the show Best Of Broadway at the Sand du Plessis Theatre and did choreography for the Grey Music Festival. Xander is also a performance coach and one of his students took part in a talent scouting competition in Florida, USA and was the only one signed by an internationally acclaimed agent.

This year he wrote and starred in the sold out children’s theatre production ‘Hans Haas se Hospitaal’ at the Free State Arts Festival. Being asked a lot to act as the Creative Director/choreographer Xander’s list of productions keeps on growing.
